Harry Donald Secombe (b. 8/9/1921 – d. 11/4/2001)

Harry SecombeHarry Secombe, was born in Swansea in Wales. Prior to his service in World War 2 he worked as a clerk and impersonator, but had considered a career in opera. It was during his service in North Africa and Italy that he met Spike Milligan and they performed in troop concerts. After the war while working as an impersonator at The Windmill Theatre he met Peter Sellers and Michael Bentine (one of the original members of The Goons who left early in the series).
Secombe’s major character in The Goon Show was the lead of Neddie Seagoon, around whom the other characters revolved.  After The Goon Show, he had a successful career in movies and stage comedy, TV presenting of religious programmes, and as a singer, including the musical Pickwick and the film Oliver in 1968.
He was married to Myra Atherton with whom he had four children. Secombe received a CBE in 1963 and then a Knighthood in 1981, before he died of prostate cancer at the age of 79.
